Tom Battin is a Full Professor in environmental sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. He studied zoology and aquatic ecology at the University of Vienna. Today, his work focusses on the hidden microbial life in mountain streams. His team currently works on unraveling the genomic and ecological success of microbes in streams that drain the roof of our planet. His research also aims at understanding the role of streams and rivers for the global carbon cycle. Besides environmental sciences, he ventures into b/w photography to explore various components of transitions in space and time. He has always been interested to explore the interface between science and art
