He was chief of cardiac surgery at Spedali Civili in Brescia from 1986 to 1996 and professor and chairman of cardiac surgery at the S.Raffaele University Hospital in Milan from 1996 to 2017.
He is author or co-author of more than 700 peer-reviewed papers.
He invented a technique of mitral repair which is used in the entire world and is the base of the percutaneous treatment of mitral insufficiency.
