At Caltech, from 1967 to 2009, Kip Thorne led an Astrophysics research group. 53 students received their PhDs under his mentorship. In 1984, Kip co-founded LIGO, which has discovered gravitational waves from colliding black holes. For this, Kip shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics. In 2009, Kip began a new career that combines art and science, including the movie Interstellar and a forthcoming book of his poetry and paintings by Lia Halloran titled "The Warped Side of our Universe".
